Crazy flowers
I don't even remember if this is a Christmas or Easter cactus. I'm pretty sure the plant doesn't remember either. It just blooms when it feels like it...in cool weather, of course. I dare not move it once it starts to bud, or they abort. This year it bloomed prolifically (10+ flowers) around Christmas, so I guess it's a Christmas cactus. For now.Tuesday, April 21, 2009
Spring Wildflowers
Spring has finally started to appear! Can you believe it? Of course, they're still talking snow. I thought the FCC has rules about saying naughty words on air, but "snow" must not be one of those naughty words, at least by their rules. In April, it's a naughty word by my rules, however!
Anyway, ds7 and I found the following while we were riding on the Rail Trail the other day: bloodroot 
and two little sprigs of Dutchman's breeches. 
I showed him how the bloodroot leaves and stem "bleed" (it was more orange than red, strangely...usually it's red!) Dutchman's breeches are my favorite...they're so cute and they really do look like upside-down Dutch boy pants hanging from a clothesline. The timing was especially appropriate, as we had just finished reading The Wheel on the School the night before :-) In my yard there are three little wild strawberry blossoms (so far). 
I'm so glad to see the first signs of spring. Bring on some more flowers, and some wild strawberries to munch on, too!

My yard smells so good!
I wish trees bloomed all summer! Spring smells so good. The crabapples are in full bloom, the lilacs are just sprouting out, and I have no idea what the other trees are (they're in neighbor's yards) but they just smell GOOD! Makes being in the yard a total pleasure. And speaking of being in the yard, I picked the first 3 morel mushrooms today! I didn't want them to go bad on me. I'll probably pick more tomorrow. We're up to 19 so far. Yummy!!!

Spring Flowers
Yay, the trillium are blooming! They are my all-time favorite flower. We went for a walk in the woods, and there were whole hillsides just covered with beautiful white blooms. I'm so glad to see the best sign of spring!

More signs of spring :-)
The violets have popped out in my yard--literally around our feet!
Mom was working in the yard yesterday and she said there was one flower when she started, and she literally could watch them open around her as she worked. I love my spring violets! We have yellow, white, variegated, light purple, and dark purple. My shadbush (Juneberry) is also in full bloom--I have a beautiful view from my kitchen window :-)

It's a yellow/orange cheetah print. You should have heard all the comments I got in the store when people saw it and realized what it was. Come on, people, live a little bit. It's much more fun to sweep with a cheetah broom than a plain, ordinary old green one ;-)

Spring Walk
We went for a walk this weekend and were pleasantly surprised to find spring wildflowers blooming already! That's early, for our neck of the woods :-) We were blessed by large stands of hepaticas 
and lily of the valley.
I'm anxious for the trillium and lady's slippers--those are my favorite spring flowers. Couple more weeks for those!

God's Beauties
Last weekend, we spent the weekend at a church retreat. I always like...no, make that LOVE...this retreat, because for $120, we camp and eat. No cooking!!!! The food is always varied and delicious, too :-)
So anyways, I walked around the lake on the boardwalk every single day that we were there (in addition to back and forth to the camper zillions of times a day, plus riding my bike around!) Sunday morning dh walked with me, and we were blessed with a real NATURE walk. First, we came around a bend, and there was a doe 15 feet ahead of us. We stood and watched each other, and she finally crossed over the boardwalk and into a more brushy area where she watched us slowly pass by. Guess there were some good eats and she wasn't going to leave them! Then, further down the boardwalk, we encountered a hummingbird. Now I don't know about you, but I love hummingbirds. They're just so cute and tiny and active. This one was definitely active! So active that I'm not sure she knew we were there. She was enjoying the purple thistle flowers clustered next to the boardwalk. It was neat seeing her circle each flower, then flit to the next flower and circle it. Then she found a stand of wild snapdragons. She buzzed several before she found one that was full of nectar. Then she quazi-perched on a blade of grass as she drank and drank and drank from the snapdragon flower. She finally got her fill and went up into a pine tree for a bit of a rest. We probably stood watching her for 5 minutes before we finally moved on. My dh even commented that we'd had a REAL nature walk ;-)
