Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying

Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying
Text written in 1599 by Philip Nicolai (1556-1608), translated in 1858 by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878)
Sung to WACHET AUF, composed in 1599 by Philip Nicolai, harmonized by J. S. Bach (1685-1750)

Isaiah 21:12 The watchman replies, “Morning is coming, but also the night. If you would ask, then ask; and come back yet again.”

Matthew 25:6, 7  At midnight the cry rang out: "Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!" Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.

V. 1 Wake, awake, for night is flying,
The watchmen on the heights are crying,
Awake, Jerusalem, arise!
Midnight's solemn hour is tolling,
His chariot wheels are nearer rolling,
He comes; prepare, ye virgins wise.
Rise up, with willing feet
Go forth, the Bridegroom meet;
Alleluia!
Bear through the night your well-trimmed light,
Speed forth to join the marriage rite.

Psalm 97:8 Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments, Lord.

V. 2 Zion hears the watchmen singing,
Her heart with deep delight is springing,
She wakes, she rises from her gloom;
Forth her Bridegroom comes, all-glorious,
In grace arrayed, by truth victorious;
Her star is risen, her Light is come!
All hail, incarnate Lord,
Our crown, and our reward!
Alleluia!
We haste along, in pomp of song,
And gladsome join the marriage throng.

1 Corinthians 2:9 However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him....

Revelation 21:2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

V. 3 Lamb of God, the heavens adore Thee,
And men and angels sing before Thee,
With harp and cymbal's clearest tone.
By the pearly gates in wonder
We stand, and swell the voice of thunder,
That echoes round Thy dazzling throne.
No vision ever brought,
No ear hath ever caught,
Such bliss and joy;
We raise the song, we swell the throng,
To praise Thee ages all along.

Rejoice, the Lord Is King

Rejoice, the Lord Is King
Text written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Sung to DARWALL'S 148th, composed by John Darwall (1731-1789)

Psalm 97:1 The Lord reigns, let the earth be glad;
let the distant shores rejoice.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

V. 1 Rejoice, the Lord is King!
Your Lord and King adore!
Rejoice, give thanks, and sing,
And triumph evermore:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Revelation 3:21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.

V. 2 Jesus, the Savior, reigns,
The God of truth and love;
When He had purged our stains,
He took His seat above:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Revelation 1:18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

V. 3 His kingdom cannot fail,
He rules o'er earth and heaven;
The keys of death and grave
Are to our Jesus given:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

2 Timothy 4:1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:...

V. 4 Rejoice, in glorious hope!
Our Lord the judge shall come,
And take His servants up
To their eternal home:
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice!
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Jesus Is Coming Again

Jesus Is Coming Again
Text written in 1872 by Jessie E. Strout
Hymn tune composed in 1872 by George E. Lee

Psalm 149:5 Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor
and sing for joy on their beds.

Isaiah 58:1 Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.
Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.

John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

V. 1 Lift up the trumpet, and loud let it ring:
Jesus is coming again!
Cheer up, ye pilgrims, be joyful and sing;
Jesus is coming again!
Coming again, coming again,
Jesus is coming again!

Psalm 96:12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

Psalm 98:8 Let the rivers clap their hands,
let the mountains sing together for joy.

Matthew 24:30 Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.

Revelation 13:8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.

V. 2 Echo it, hilltops; proclaim it, ye plains:
Jesus is coming again!
Coming in glory, the Lamb that was slain;
Jesus is coming again!
Coming again, coming again,
Jesus is coming again!

Psalm 98:7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.

V. 3 Heavings of earth, tell the vast, wondering throng:
Jesus is coming again!
Tempests, and whirlwinds, the anthem prolong;
Jesus is coming again!
Coming again, coming again,
Jesus is coming again!

Luke 21:10, 11 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven."

V. 4 Nations are angry--by this we do know
Jesus is coming again!
Knowledge increases; men run to and fro;
Jesus is coming again!
Coming again, coming again,
Jesus is coming again!

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing
Text written in 1739 by Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Sung to AZMON C.M., composed by Carl G. Glaser (1784-1829), arr. by Lowell Mason (1792-1872)

Psalm 96:2, 3 Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

v. 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of His grace!

Psalm 96:10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.” The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.

V. 2 My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread thro' all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name.

V. 3 Jesus! the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease,
'Tis music in the sinners' ears,
'Tis life, and health, and peace.

Revelation 1:5 ...and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,...

V. 4 He breaks the power of canceled sin,
He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean;
His blood availed for me.

V. 5 He speaks, and listening to His voice,
New life the dead receive;
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice;
The humble poor, believe.

V. 6 Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savior come;
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

Jesus Saves

Jesus Saves
Text written by Priscilla J. Owens (1829-1899)
Tune written in 1882 by William J. Kirkpatrick (1838-1921)

Psalm 96:2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.

Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."

V. 1 We have heard a joyful sound,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Spread the gladness all around,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Bear the news to every land,
Climb the steeps and cross the waves,
Onward, 'tis our Lord's command,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves,

Leviticus 25:10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan.

V. 2 Waft it on the rolling tide,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Tell to sinners, far and wide,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Sing, ye islands of the sea.
Echo back, ye ocean caves,
Earth shall keep her jubilee,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

Revelation 1:18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

V. 3 Sing above the battle's strife,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
By His death and endless life,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Sing it softly through the gloom,
When the heart for mercy craves,
Sing in triumph o'er the tomb,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

V. 4 Give the winds a mighty voice,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Let the nations now reoice,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves;
Shout salvation full and free,
Highest hills and deepest caves,
This our song of victory,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves.

God Himself Is With Us

God Himself Is With Us
Text written in 1729 by Gerhard Tersteegen (1608-1769), Tr. by "Hymnal 1940"
Sung to WUNDERBARER KONIG, composed in 1680 by Joachim Neander (1650-1680)

Psalm 33:8 Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him.

V. 1 God Himself is with us;
Let us all adore Him,
And with awe appear before Him.
God is here within us;
Soul, in silence fear Him,
Humbly, fervently draw near Him.
Now His own who have known
God, in worship lowly,
Yield their spirits wholly.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?

V. 2 Come, abide within me;
Let my soul, like Mary,
Be Thine earthly sanctuary,
Come, indwelling Spirit,
With transfigured splendor;
Love and honor will I render.
Where I go here below,
Let me bow before Thee,
Know Thee and adore Thee.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."

1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

V. 3 Gladly we surrender
Earth's deceitful treasures,
Pride of life, and sinful pleasures:
Gladly, Lord, we offer
Thine to be forever,
Soul and life and each endeavor.
Thou alone shalt be known
Lord of all our being,
Life's true way decreeing.

Let All on Earth Their Voices Raise

Let All on Earth Their Voices Raise
Text written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
Sung to OLD 113th, attributed to Matthaus Greiter (c. 1500-1552) and arranged by V. Earl Copes (1921 - ? )

Psalm 96:1-9 Sing God a brand-new song! Earth and everyone in it, sing! Sing to God—worship God! Shout the news of his victory from sea to sea, Take the news of his glory to the lost, News of his wonders to one and all! For God is great, and worth a thousand Hallelujahs. His terrible beauty makes the gods look cheap; Pagan gods are mere tatters and rags. God made the heavens— Royal splendor radiates from him, A powerful beauty sets him apart. Bravo, God, Bravo! Everyone join in the great shout: Encore! In awe before the beauty, in awe before the might. Bring gifts and celebrate, Bow before the beauty of God, Then to your knees—everyone worship!

V. 1 Let all on earth their voices raise,
To sing the great Jehovah's praise,
And bless His holy name:
His glory let the people know,
His wonders to the nations show,
His saving grace proclaim.

V. 2 He framed the globe; He built the sky;
He made the shining worlds on high,
And reigns in glory there:
His beams are majesty and light;
His beauties, how divinely bright!
His dwelling place, how fair!

V. 3 Come, the great day, the glorious hour,
When earth shall feel His saving power,
All nations fear His name;
Then shall the race of men confess
The beauty of His holiness,
His saving grace proclaim.
