O Worship the Lord

O Worship the Lord
Text written by J. S. B. Monsell (1811-1875)
Sung to SOUTHAMPTON, composed in 1886 by Edwin Barnes (1864-1930)

1 Chronicles 16:29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

Matthew 2:11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

V. 1 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,
Bow down before Him, His glory proclaim;
With gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,
Kneel and adore Him; the Lord is His name.

V. 2 Low at His feet lay thy burden of carefulness;
High on His heart He will bear it for thee,
Comfort thy sorrows and answer thy prayerfulness,
Guiding thy steps as may best for thee be.

V. 3 Fear not to enter His courts in the slenderness
Of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine.
Truth in its beauty and love in its tenderness,
These are the offerings to lay on His shrine.

Psalm 30:5 For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

V. 4 These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,
He will accept for the name that is dear;
Mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness,
Trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear.
