Sing Praise to God

Sing Praise to God
Text written in 1675 by Johann J. Schutz (1640-1690), translated in 1864 by Frances Elizabeth Cox (1812-1897)
Sung to MIT FREUDEN ZART, Bohemian Brethren's Kirchengeslinge, Berlin, 1566

Psalm 148:5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
for at his command they were created.

V. 1 Sing praise to God who reigns above,
The God of all creation,
The God of power, the God of love,
The God of our salvation;
With healing balm my soul He fills,
And every faithless murmur stills;
To God all praise and glory!

Psalm 121:4 Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

V. 2 What God's almighty power hath made
His gracious mercy keepeth;
By morning glow or evening shade,
His watchful eye ne'er sleepeth,
Within the kingdom of His might,
Lo! all is just, and all is right:
To God all praise and glory!

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Isaiah 66:13 As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you;
and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.

V. 3 The Lord is never far away,
Throughout all grief distressing
An everpresent help and stay,
Our peace, and joy, and blessing.
As with a mother's tender hand,
He leads His own, His chosen band;
To God all praise and glory!

V. 4 Then all my gladsome way along,
I sing aloud Thy praises,
That men may hear the grateful song
My voice unwearied raises:
Be joyful in the Lord, my heart!
Both soul and body bear your part!
To God all praise and glory!
