Softly Now the Light of Day
Text written in 1824 by George W. Doane (1799-1859)
Sung to SEYMOUR, composed in 1826 by Carl M. von Weber (1786-1826)
Psalm 141:2 May my prayer be set before you like incense;
may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.
V. 1 Softly now the light of day
Fades upon our sight away:
Free from care, from labor free,
Lord, we would commune with Thee.
Psalm 19:12 But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
V. 2 Thou, whose all-pervading eye
Nought escapes, without, within,
Pardon each infirmity,
Open fault, and secret sin.
V. 3 Soon from us the light of day
Shall forever pass away;
Then, from sin and sorrow free,
Take us, Lord to dwell with Thee.
