What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Text written in 1855 by John M. Scriven (1820-1886)
Sung to CONVERSE, composed in 1868 by Charles C. Converse (1832-1918)
1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Vs. 1 What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear;
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.
V. 2 Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Psalm 27:10 Though my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will receive me.
Psalm 62:8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
V. 3 Are we weak and heavy laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge,
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He'll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
