Amazing Grace
Text written in 1779 by John Newton (1725-1807), with stanza 5 written by John Rees c. 1859
Sung to the tune NEW BRITAIN, from Virginia Harmony 1831
1 Chronicles 17:16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?"
Luke 15:6 ....Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’
V. 1 Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
V. 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
V. 3 The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
Psalm 142:5 I cry to you, Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
V. 4 Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
V. 5 When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.
