Day Is Dying in the West
Text written in 1877 by Mary A. Lathbury (1841-1913)
Sung to CHAUTAUQUA, composed in 1877 by William F. Sherwin (1826-1888)
V. 1 Day is dying in the west;
Heaven is touching earth with rest;
Wait and worship while the night
Sets her evening lamps alight
Through all the sky.
Isaiah 6:3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
Refrain: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts!
Heaven and earth are full of Thee;
Heaven and earth are praising Thee,
O Lord most high!
Isaiah 57:15 For this is what the high and exalted One says—he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.
V. 2 Lord of life, beneath the dome
Of the universe, Thy home,
Gather us who seek Thy face
To the fold of Thy embrace,
For Thou art night.
Refrain
V. 3 While the deepening shadows fall,
Heart of love, enfolding all,
Thro' the glory and the grace
Of the stars that veil Thy face,
Our hearts ascend.
Refrain
V. 4 When forever from our sight
Pass the stars, the day, the night,
Lord of angels, on our eyes
Let eternal morning rise,
And shadows end.
Refrain
