Jerusalem the Golden
Text written by Bernard of Cluny (12th century), translated in 1851 by John M. Neale (1818-1866)
Sung to EWING, composed in 1853 by Alexander Ewing (1830-1895)
Exodus 3:8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
Revelation 21:2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
V. 1 Jerusalem the golden,
With milk and honey blest,
Beneath thy contemplation
Sink heart and voice oppressed.
I know not, O I know not
What holy joys are there;
What radiancy of glory,
What bliss beyond compare.
V. 2 They stand, those halls of Zion,
All jubilant with song,
And bright with many an angel,
And all the martyr throng.
The Prince is ever in them,
The daylight is serene;
The pastures of the blessed
Are decked in glorious sheen.
Ecclesiastes 10:19 A feast is made for laughter, wine makes life merry,
and money is the answer for everything.
Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
Revelation 3:5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.
V. 3 There is the throne of David,
And there, from care released,
The shout of them that triumph,
The song of them that feast;
And they, who, with their Leader,
Have conquered in the fight,
Forever and forever
Are clad in robes of white.
V. 4 O sweet and blessed country,
The home of God's elect!
O sweet and blessed country,
That eager hearts expect!
Jesus, in mercy bring us
To that dear land of rest;
Who art, with God the Father,
And Spirit, ever blest.
