Holy God, We Praise Your Name
18th Century German Verse, translated by Clarence A. Walworth (1820-1900)
Sung to GROSSER GOTT, from Katholische's Gesangbuch, Vienna, 1774
Psalm 99:9 Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain,
for the Lord our God is holy.
V. 1 Holy God, we praise Your name;
Lord of all, we bow before You!
All on earth Your scepter claim,
All in heaven above adore You;
Infinite Your vast domain.
Everlasting is Your reign.
Isaiah 6:2, 3 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
V. 2 Hark! the loud celestial hymn
Angel choirs above are raising,
Cherubim and seraphim,
In unceasing chorus praising;
Fill the heavens with sweet accord:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord.
John 10:30 I and the Father are one.
2 Corinthians 13:14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
V. 3 Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, three we name You;
While in essence only one,
Undivided God we claim You;
And adoring bend the knee,
While we own the mystery.
