God of Our Fathers

God of Our Fathers
Text written in 1876 by Daniel C. Roberts (1841-1907)
Sung to NATIONAL HYMN, composed in 1892 by George W. Warren (1828-1902)

Isaiah 40:26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.

V. 1 God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies,
Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.

1 Samuel 7:12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

V. 2 Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast;
Be Thou our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay,
Thy word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.

Psalm 59:17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely.

V. 3 From war's alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Revelation 21:25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.

V. 4 Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to neverending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.
