My Soul, Be on Thy Guard
Text written in 1781 by George Heath (1745-1822)
Sung to LABAN, composed in 1830 by Lowell Mason (1792-1872)
Mark 13:33 Be on guard! Be alert ! You do not know when that time will come.
V. 1 My soul, be on thy guard!
Ten thousand foes arise;
The hosts of sin are pressing hard
To draw thee from the skies.
V. 2 O watch, and fight, and pray!
The battle ne'er give o'er;
Renew it boldly every day,
And help divine implore.
Ecclesiastes 8:8 As no one has power over the wind to contain it,
so no one has power over the time of their death.
As no one is discharged in time of war,
so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
Revelation 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.
V. 3 Ne'er think the victory won,
Nor lay thine armor down;
Thy arduous task will not be done
Till thou obtain the crown.
