God Moves in a Mysterious Way
Text written by William Cowper (1731-1800)
Sung to DUNDEE C.M., from "Scottish Psalter, 1615"
Psalm 77:19 Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.
Nahum 1:3 The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.
V. 1 God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.
Ezekiel 34:26 I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.
V. 2 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.
V. 3 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
V. 4 His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.
Proverbs 15:19 The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns,
but the path of the upright is a highway.
V. 5 Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.
