I Do Believe
Text written in 1741 by Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Sung to the hymn tune I DO BELIEVE
Psalm 88:9 My eyes are dim with grief. I call to you, Lord, every day; I spread out my hands to you.
John 6:68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."
V. 1 Father, I stretch my hands to Thee;
No other help I know;
If Thou withdraw Thyself from me,
Ah, whither shall I go?
V. 2 On Thy dear Son I now believe,
O let me feel Thy power;
And all my varied wants relieve,
In this accepted hour.
Hebrews 12:2 ...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
V. 3 Author of faith! to Thee I lift
My weary, longing eyes;
O let me now receive that gift;
My soul without it dies.
V. 4 Surely Thou canst not let me die;
O speak, and I shall live;
And here I will unwearied lie,
Till Thou Thy Spirit give.
V. 5 How would my fainting soul rejoice
Could I but see Thy face!
Now let me hear Thy quickening voice,
And taste Thy pardoning grace.
Acts 8:37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.”And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
V. 6 I do believe, I now believe
That Jesus died for me,
And that He shed His precious blood
From sin to set me free.
