Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts
Text written by Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153), translated by Ray Palmer (1808-1887)
Sung to ABENDS L.M., composed in 1874 by Herbert S. Oakley (1830-1903)
Psalm 36:9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.
V. 1 Jesus, Thou joy of loving hearts!
Thou found of life! Thou light of men!
From the best bliss that earth imparts,
We turn unfilled to Thee again.
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God endures forever.
Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Romans 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
V. 2 Thy truth unchanged has ever stood;
Thou savest those that on Thee call;
To them that seek Thee Thou art good,
To them that find Thee, all in all.
Psalm 55:6 I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest."
John 4:14 But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
John 6:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
V. 3 We taste Thee, O Thou living Bread,
And long to feast upon Thee still;
We drink of Thee, the Fountainhead,
And thirst our souls from Thee to fill!
V. 4 Our restless spirits yearn for Thee,
Where'er our changeful lot is cast;
Glad, when Thy gracious smile we see,
Blest, when our faith can hold Thee fast.
V. 5 O Jesus, ever with us stay;
Make all our moments calm and bright;
Chase the dark night of sin away,
Shed o'er the world Thy holy light!
