Savior, Breathe an Evening Blessing

Savior, Breathe an Evening Blessing
Text written in 1820 by James Edmeston (1791-1867)
Sung to EVENING PRAYER, composed in 1878 by George C. Stebbins (1846-1945)

V. 1 Savior, breathe an evening blessing,
Ere repose our spirits seal;
Sin and want we come confessing;
Thou canst save, and Thou canst heal.

Psalm 121:4 Indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

Psalm 139:12 Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

V. 2 Though the night be dark and dreary,
Darkness cannot hide from Thee;
Thou art He who, never weary,
Watchest where Thy people be.

Psalm 34:7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
and he delivers them.

Psalm 91:5, 6 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.

V. 3 Though destruction walk around us,
Though the arrow past us fly,
Angel guards from Thee surround us,
We are safe if Thou art night.

V. 4 Should swift death this night o'er-take us,
And our couch become our tomb,
May the morn of glory wake us,
Clad in light and deathless bloom.
